This post is part of my Where to Take Your Maternity Photos series, where I share the beauty of capturing this special time in different settings — in-studio, outdoors, and at home. Each location brings its own unique feeling to your maternity photos, and today’s post is all about the beauty of capturing your photos in the comfort of your own home. As a Minneapolis maternity photographer, it’s my job to help you decide which option is best for you, so I hope you find these helpful!
Molly and Logan invited me into their light-filled Minnetonka nursery on a November morning. The room was bright and beautiful, with white walls and gentle natural light coming through the windows. No detail was overlooked as they prepared their nursery for their little girl due to arrive by Christmastime – the dainty bookshelves on the walls, the cozy glider, the blanket draped over the crib. They kept the nursery neutral because they admittedly don’t like the color pink (although they did add in a pop of pink with a small pouf next to the crib). 🙂
Molly looked effortlessly elegant in a neutral beige sweater dress. She and Logan were so loving and excited as they snuggled up next to their baby’s crib. The soft light, cozy textures, and genuine connection between them created photographs that feel timeless and elegant, which is my vibe when capturing all of my maternity photos.

While studio and outdoor sessions each have their own charm, there’s something uniquely personal about in-home maternity photos. Your home is where your story is unfolding right now — the place that will soon hold late-night feedings, baby giggles, and countless firsts. Photographing your maternity session here just adds a special touch to your photos.
Here are a few reasons I love in-home maternity sessions:
Every home holds it’s own meaning and feel. Photographing in these spaces makes your images deeply personal. One day, your child will be able to look back and see the very room that was waiting for them! As a mom of 2, I still look back at my own photos taken in my baby’s nursery and it almost brings a tear to my eye as I think about that time, and how fast time flies.
Being at home naturally puts you at ease. There’s no need to rush, bundle up for the weather, or worry about travel. You can take your time, breathe, and simply focus on each other. This relaxed feeling really can show in your photos — the gentle smiles, the laughter that comes easily, and the genuine connection that unfolds when you feel completely at home.
Maternity sessions are about more than documenting this season — they’re about pausing to appreciate it. An in-home session invites you to slow down and connect before life changes in the most beautiful way.
Let’s be honest, we all know that here in Minnesota the weather can change in an instant. An in-home session removes all that stress. Rain or shine, your home is always warm, inviting, and full of beautiful light. You can schedule your photos anytime of year, knowing the environment will be perfect.
Soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully in home settings. Creams, beiges, soft grays, muted blushes, and light blues keep the look timeless and let emotion take center stage. These shades reflect light gently, creating an elegant and cohesive feel that complements natural indoor lighting.
If you’re expecting a boy, soft blues and neutrals create a classic, peaceful tone. For a girl, warm creams and blush tones add a gentle, romantic touch. And if you’re keeping the gender a surprise, earth tones — ivory, oatmeal, or taupe — are always lovely and organic.

I know choosing what to wear for photos is stressful – especially when you’re expecting! All of my maternity clients have access to my curated client wardrobe, filled with dresses chosen for their flattering silhouettes and soft textures. All are maxi and midi dresses, from size small to large. Whether your session is at home, outdoors, or in the studio, these pieces are available at no extra charge.

My goal for every maternity session — whether it’s in-home, in-studio, or outdoors — is to create images that feel heartfelt and timeless. I want you to look back and remember not just what this season looked like, but what it felt like. My style is soft, elegant, and feminine. If this is the vibe you’re going for we will be great together!
In Molly’s session, that feeling came through effortlessly: the glow of morning light, the calm of the nursery, the quiet anticipation between two people about to become parents. These photos will only grow more meaningful with time — a reminder of the love and excitement that filled their home before baby arrived.
And, as an added bonus- when you’re photographing in the comfort of your own home you can always add in your first born furry friend into your pics to make it even more fun and meaningful. 🙂

Molly and her husband’s in-home maternity photos were peaceful, cozy, and full of emotion — everything I love about photographing this stage of life. Home is where your story begins, and capturing that story in your own space makes the memories even more special.
If you’re deciding where to take your maternity photos, think about what setting feels most you. Whether that’s in the studio, outdoors surrounded by nature, or in the comfort of your own home, each offers something beautifully unique.
