The willow trees at Lake of the Isles are one of the most whimsical and dreamy maternity locations in Minneapolis — soft water, gentle movement, and that classic airy look.
But the secret most people don’t realize: this location actually photographs best in the morning!
The best willows are on the west side of the lake so you really want the sun rising across the lake to get this dreamy look. Also, in the evening it fills with walkers, runners, and groups! Morning gives soft shade, privacy, and calm water — which creates that dreamy, peaceful feeling most moms are hoping for.
This spot works beautifully if you love:
It feels relaxed and natural rather than posed, which is why it’s one of my outdoor favorites!

Let’s be honest, outdoor sessions are beautiful but in Minnesota they’re really only feasible for 6 months (or less) of the year!
A bright studio removes weather, wind, and temperature from the experience completely. Honestly, I LOVE Minneapolis maternity photos in a studio. I know what to expect, I know the photos will be clean, bright and beautiful and hey, women are pregnant all months of the year so it’s a great option!
Perfect if you:
Many moms end up choosing studio even in other seasons because it feels calm and effortless. Nothing competes with you — which keeps the images feeling classic years later.

When September and early October arrive, Longfellow Gardens turns into one of the most colorful locations in the Twin Cities.
This is a perfect middle ground between nature and structure — paths, greenery, and color without needing to walk far. It’s especially nice for families with little kids or mamas later in pregnancy who don’t want a long walk to the location.
Best for:
Fall dates book quickly because the season is short, so planning a little earlier helps here.

Your home is already meaningful. You don’t have to travel, pack, or coordinate around weather — and that ease shows in the photos.
These sessions tend to feel the most personal. We use the spaces you naturally live in: a nursery corner, a couch, a window with morning light. Partners and kids relax faster, and the session flows more like a slow morning together than a photo shoot.
This is a beautiful option if you want:
And season never matters — winter snowstorms and summer heat both stay outside.

There really isn’t a single “best” maternity location in Minneapolis — only the one that fits how you want this season to feel.
Some families want movement and fresh air.
Some want quiet and warmth.
Some want a scenic backdrop.
Others just want to remember what life felt like before baby arrived.
Once you decide that part, the location becomes simple.
And the most beautiful images always come from the place where you feel the most at ease.
