In-home family sessions are one of the most meaningful ways to document your family, but they also come with the most questions. As an Edina family photographer, I know that outdoor photographs are beautiful but let’s be honest- it’s really only realistically feasible 6 months out of the year! Sometimes you want pictures in the winter months, and/or capturing photos in your home is something special altogether.
Parents usually wonder if their house is clean enough, bright enough, or styled enough. They worry their kids will be distracted or that the photos won’t feel polished compared to an outdoor location.
The truth is that in-home sessions are relaxed and simple when you know what to expect — and when the right environment is chosen intentionally. My goal is always to create images that feel natural and personal while still maintaining the light, timeless look you see throughout my work.

Your home is where your children feel the most comfortable. They know where to sit, where to play, and where to find you when they want a hug. Because of that, sessions tend to feel calmer and more genuine than being in a new location.
We are not trying to recreate posed studio portraits inside your house. Instead, we document connection in a familiar space — reading books on the bed, sitting together in the living room, or simply holding your child in the place you spend everyday life.
Years from now, these photographs hold meaning beyond how everyone looked. They show the spaces that were part of your children’s childhood.

To achieve the light-filled style you see in my portfolio, homes do need a few key qualities:
• large windows
• consistent natural light
• neutral or lightly colored surroundings
This does not mean your home has to be large or professionally decorated. It simply means the areas we photograph in should feel open and bright rather than dark or heavily colored.
When my clients choose to do in-home family photos, I often will request they send a few quick phone photos of their main spaces ahead of time. I help choose the best rooms and give simple suggestions if anything needs adjusting — often just removing a few items or using a different bedspread.
This ensures your gallery matches the same clean, timeless look you expect.

You do not need a spotless home or magazine styling. We typically use only one or two areas with good light, and everything else can remain lived-in.
Most preparation involves:
Families are often surprised how little of their home we actually use. The focus is always connection, not decor. Honestly, you can just move everything into one room that we aren’t using and we’re good to go!

I guide the entire session so you are never wondering what to do with your hands or how to get your children to cooperate.
Rather than asking kids to sit and smile, I direct small movements that naturally create interaction — sitting close together, walking, holding, do a little dance, nuzzle noses, or playing gently. This keeps the session moving while still looking effortless.
Children are allowed to move and be themselves. That freedom is usually what produces the expressions parents love most.
Many children become shy or overwhelmed in unfamiliar places. At home they relax quickly, which means fewer forced smiles and fewer power struggles.
There is also no rushing out the door or coordinating timing with naps and travel. Families often tell me the session feels more like a slow morning together than an event to manage.
When parents feel calm, children follow — and that changes the entire experience.

Outdoor sessions are beautiful and classic. In-home sessions add emotional context.
You will remember the bedroom they slept in, the couch they climbed onto, and the way they fit into your arms in that season of life. Those details quietly disappear over time, and photographs preserve them without needing anything elaborate.
The goal is a gallery that feels refined and cohesive while still unmistakably yours.

In-home sessions work especially well for families who:
If your home fits the light requirements, it often becomes the most personal location you could choose.

You do not need to figure out styling, posing, or preparation on your own. I help with clothing coordination, room selection, and timing so everything feels simple.
