Spring and summer in Minnesota are pure magic for family photos (I personally love it so much better than fall leaves!!). From blooming apple trees to lush green parks and long golden evenings by the lake, the backdrop is already beautiful — the right outfits simply elevate it.
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed trying to coordinate everyone (I definitely have!!) you’re not alone. As a Minneapolis, Minnesota family photographer, I’m here to help relieve some of your stress! One tip – the goal isn’t perfection — it’s cohesion. When colors and textures work together, your images feel timeless, natural, and focused on connection. You want to look effortless, not forced (this old thing?).
Below is everything you need to confidently style your spring or summer family session.
Your wardrobe sets the tone for your entire gallery. Soft, intentional styling allows the focus to stay where it belongs — on your faces, your movement, and your connection.
The right palette:
Think of your outfits as part of the story — they should support it, not compete with it.

Spring and summer light here tends to be soft and warm, especially during golden hour. While darker warm colors look great for fall family photos, in the spring I always recommend softer, gentle tones!
Some beautiful combinations for this season include:
Instead of matching everyone in the exact same shade, build around one outfit (usually mom’s dress) and coordinate outward. If her dress has movement and texture, the rest of the family can anchor around it with softer basics. I do recommend one or two family members wear a soft pattern – it adds so much interest to the photos vs. all solids!
Styling doesn’t need to be complicated. A few thoughtful guidelines make all the difference.
DO:
AVOID:
If you’re unsure, simpler is almost always better.

Spring sessions can still feel cool, especially near water. Summer sessions can be warm and bright.
For spring:
For summer:
Planning with the season in mind ensures everyone feels comfortable — and that always shows in photos.
Here are some tried and true classic, timeless outfit looks for your family! I do provide personalized style boards for all of my family photography clients, but this gives you a peek at some of my favorites!

There are so many places to find the same or similar outfits as the ones above. Many you will recognize, but a few you likely don’t! These are my favorite places to shop for family photos – I hope you find it helpful!
A helpful tip: start with one anchor outfit (again, usually mom), then build the rest of the family around it using coordinating tones you already see in the fabric.

A few small details make a big difference:
Preparation allows your session to feel relaxed — and that calm energy always translates on camera.
Spring and summer family photos in Minnesota are about light, warmth, and connection. When your outfits are thoughtfully coordinated — not overly styled — the result is imagery that feels natural, elegant, and lasting.
