Family photos with toddlers or young kids can feel unpredictable — especially if you’re imagining perfectly posed smiles. The truth is, the most beautiful family photographs rarely come from perfectly behaved children. They come from kids who feel comfortable, curious, and free to be themselves.
As a Minneapolis family photographer, I approach sessions with young children very differently than a traditional “sit and smile” experience. Whether we’re in the studio or outdoors, my goal is to create an environment where kids can relax, play, and naturally interact with their family.
If you’re planning family photos and wondering how to prepare your toddler or young child (or to be honest, prepare YOURSELF), here are a few simple things that can make the experience smooth, relaxed, and actually fun.

The way you introduce family photos to your child matters more than you might think. Instead of framing it as something they have to do, talk about it as a fun outing.
You might say something like:
“We’re going to go play and take some pictures together!”
Keeping the tone light and positive helps kids arrive curious instead of pressured.
One of the biggest mistakes parents make before a session is reminding kids over and over to smile or behave.
Children can feel that pressure immediately.
During my sessions, we focus much more on connection and play than looking directly at the camera. Kids are free to move, explore, snuggle their parents, laugh, and even be a little silly. Those authentic moments create photographs that feel real and full of life.
Some of the most meaningful images happen when kids aren’t even aware the camera is there.
Outdoor family photo sessions in Minneapolis, Edina and the Twin Cities area are perfect for young kids because they naturally invite movement and play.
Instead of asking toddlers to sit still for long periods, we might:
Movement helps kids stay engaged and relaxed — and it results in genuine smiles and laughter.

Before your session, I send a questionnaire asking about your children — including their favorite toys, characters, or interests.
That helps me bring little things that instantly connect with them.
If your toddler loves Paw Patrol, I might bring a Paw Patrol toy. If they’re obsessed with trucks, I might have a few trucks ready. I have a “special bag” ready with surprises to break things up a bit.
It’s a simple way to help them feel comfortable and excited, especially during the first few minutes of the session.
I do not put a time limit on family sessions (unless they are minis!). You get as long as it takes to get amazing photos. Sometimes it can be 30 minutes, sometimes over an hour. I’m fully flexible and will stay as little or as long as we need for your family.
Some children jump right in. Others need a little time to observe, explore, or stay close to mom or dad before they feel ready.
During our session there’s always space for:
There’s no rush. When kids feel that relaxed pace, their personalities start to shine.

This is something parents say all the time during sessions:
“I don’t think we got anything… they were just running everywhere.”
And almost every time, they’re surprised when they see the gallery.
What feels chaotic in the moment often turns into the most joyful, authentic images — laughter, hugs, tiny hands reaching for mom, siblings playing together, and the beautiful in-between moments families never notice happening.
Those are the photographs you’ll treasure years from now.

Photographing families with toddlers is something I do all the time. Kids don’t need to be perfectly behaved for beautiful photographs to happen.
They just need space to be themselves.
When parents relax and let their children explore, the session becomes something much more meaningful than posed portraits — it becomes a memory of your family exactly as you are in this season of life.
Whether your session takes place in my studio or outdoors in one of the beautiful open spaces around Minneapolis, my goal is always the same: to create a calm, enjoyable experience where your family can simply be together. If you’re looking for a Family Photographer in Minneapolis – I’d love to meet you!
You don’t need perfectly behaved kids.
You just need to show up and let the moments unfold.
The magic usually happens when you least expect it.
