Senior year is such a once-in-a-lifetime season—and your photos should feel like you. Not overdone, not forced… just confident, natural, and effortlessly beautiful.
As a Minneapolis senior pictures photographer, one of the biggest questions I get from seniors (and moms!) is:
“What should I wear for senior pictures?”
The good news? It doesn’t have to be complicated. With a little planning, your outfits can elevate your entire session and help create images that feel timeless for years to come.
Most seniors bring 2–3 outfits to their session, depending on the package they’ve chose. This gives you variety without feeling overwhelming.
Think of it like this:
This balance helps tell the full story of who you are right now—confident, relaxed, and completely yourself.

Color plays a huge role in how your senior photos turn out. I love to suggest a solid combination of soft neutral(s) and a pop or two of color! Think light blues and pinks, whites and creams and kelly greens and warm reds.
If you’re planning on 3 outfits and 3 locations, you might choose a blue dress for your urban area, something soft yellow when you’re surrounded by trees, and a show-stopping white maxi for golden hour at the beach. Or start with a bright pink flirty mini dress for the gardens, a denim skirt and ruffled tank for urban, and long white maxi for the lake. Your location really should guide your outfit choice – see more about that below.

Your outfit should complement your setting, not compete with it.
Here are the type of outfits I recommend for different types of locations.
Minneapolis is amazing because you can have multiple looks in one session—from gardens to city streets—so your outfits can reflect that variety too.

The best senior photos aren’t stiff—they have movement, softness, and life.
That’s why certain pieces photograph especially well:
These details add dimension and give your hands something natural to do, which helps you feel more relaxed in front of the camera.

When it comes to senior pictures, less really is more.
Avoid anything that might distract from your face or feel dated quickly:
Simple, clean outfits will always feel more timeless—and you’ll love your photos just as much years from now.
Sorry boys, I didn’t forget you – but let’s be honest – typically the boys spend a little less time and energy planning outfits well ahead of time. 🙂 That doesn’t mean you’re not important though! For boys, I recommend a mixture of casual/everyday and elevated as well. It also depends on your personality and the type of career you might be seeking in your future. Are you going to med school or business education? Some boys like to wear a suit or a jacket! Are you a musician, or just want to keep it simple, jeans and a nice top are wonderful options. And like I said – go for a mix of both to get the variety. Same rules apply as the girls though – avoid big stripes, bold logos, and boys- clean your sneakers! Dirty shoes can wreck a very nice outfit.
A shirt with a collar looks very nice, and will please mom as well. I also love the idea of layering – a short or long sleeved tee layered with a button-down is classic and timeless.

Finding outfits that look effortless and feel like you can take a little planning, but the right shopping choices make all the difference. For Minneapolis senior pictures, there are both local boutiques and national retailers that consistently provide stylish, timeless options for teens. Local stores allow you to see how fabrics move and try on pieces that photograph beautifully, while online shops offer a convenient way to explore a wider variety of styles and colors.
Some popular local options include Altar’d State, Anthropologie, Free People and Nordstrom, which carry dresses, skirts, and flowy tops that are perfect for natural, light-filled photos. If you’re shopping online, retailers like ASOS, Lulus, Beginning Boutique, and even Amazon (hello dupes!) have a wide selection of trendy yet timeless pieces that are lightweight, flowy, and flattering on camera. For the boys, Banana Republic, Vineyard Vines, Nordstrom, Bonobos, and H&M are great options.
Don’t wait to purchase your favorite outfits for your senior photos! They DO sell out early in the year. I highly recommend planning early and buying a few options in the spring leading up to your senior pictures session (trust me!).

It’s easy to focus only on the main outfits, but the little things make a big difference in your Minneapolis senior picture session. Shoes, for example, can elevate or distract from a look—clean, well-chosen shoes like neutral sneakers, boots, or simple sandals will complement your outfit without taking attention away from you.
Small accessories, such as a simple necklace, bracelet, or watch, can add personality without overwhelming the image. Likewise, subtle nail polish and natural, polished makeup help keep the focus on your face and your expression. Paying attention to these details ensures your photos feel cohesive, intentional, and ready for display in albums, frames, or social media. This also helps keep your photos timeless so you do not look at them in 20 years and cringe!
Your senior pictures are about celebrating who you are right now, which means adding personal touches is key. Bringing items that reflect your interests, hobbies, or accomplishments—like sports gear, a musical instrument, letterman jacket, or a favorite hat—helps your images tell your story.
For seniors in Minneapolis, locations like gardens, parks, lakes, and city streets offer a variety of backdrops that pair beautifully with meaningful props. Adding personal elements not only creates more variety in your photos but also makes your session feel fun, memorable, and uniquely yours. These personal touches are often what families love most when looking back at the finished gallery years later.
Senior photos should feel like a reflection of your life right now—not just a pretty picture.

Planning your senior pictures experience in Minneapolis doesn’t have to be stressful. From choosing outfits and selecting locations to deciding which props or accessories best reflect your personality, thoughtful preparation ensures a seamless experience. Many seniors benefit from planning 2–3 outfits that provide variety, including a casual look, a more polished outfit, and an optional personal or fun ensemble.
By coordinating your wardrobe with the session location—soft, neutral tones for gardens or fields, airy colors for lakes, or slightly brighter colors for urban backdrops—you can elevate your photos without feeling forced. The right combination of outfits, details, and personal touches ensures that your senior pictures look polished, timeless, and authentically you.
