There’s something timeless about Excelsior, Minnesota. Nestled along the shores of Lake Minnetonka, its historic downtown is a dreamy blend of small-town charm and lakeside elegance. As a photographer, I love how every street, alley, and dock in Excelsior offers a unique backdrop. It’s the perfect place to capture senior pictures that feel both authentic and elevated.
Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing Veda, a 2026 grad from Edina High School, downtown Excelsior—and this session was one for the books! With warm golden light, charming, historic storefronts, and the peaceful glimmer of the lake in the background, this session felt like the best kind of spring evening in the Twin Cities. Whether you’re a local senior planning your own shoot or a parent scouting ideas, I wanted to share a behind-the-scenes look at what makes a downtown Excelsior senior session so special—and why it will continue to be in my rotation for years to come!
There are plenty of great photo spots around Minneapolis and the Twin Cities area, but Excelsior stands out. Here’s why it’s such a fantastic place for senior pictures:
1. Variety in a Walkable Area
One of the biggest perks of shooting in Excelsior is that you can get so many different looks without having to drive between locations. Within a few blocks, you’ve got:
That mix of urban and nature makes it easy to create a diverse gallery that doesn’t feel repetitive. For Veda’s shoot, we started in the heart of Water Street, took a quick venture to a tree-lined alley, wandered to the historic Excelsior docks, and finished with our grand finale – the soft, golden sunset at the beach.

2. Natural Light Magic
The way light filters through the trees and reflects off the lake in Excelsior is a photographer’s dream. Evening sessions—especially golden hour—bring a warmth and glow that flatters every skin tone and adds a little extra magic to the portraits.
3. Timeless but Trendy
Excelsior has this effortlessly stylish vibe. The vintage signs and cobblestone textures offer a classic look, but the modern shops and seasonal displays give it a fresh, current feel. Whether seniors want something traditional or a little more editorial, Excelsior has got it!
Veda arrived ready to go for her 90 minute session, with three outfits carefully chosen to reflect different sides of her personality—a casual, but flowy long dress with cute bowtie shoulder straps, a flirty yellow dress from Altar’d State, and for the grand finale she chose a long, white beautiful dress to match the lake and beach vibes.
We met at the heart of Water Street and planned a loose route through downtown, with time built in for spontaneous stops when the light or backdrop caught our eye. Here’s how it all unfolded:
First Stop: Water Street Storefronts
We kicked off the session with Veda in a long, girly blue dress. This dress was perfect against the neutral white and blue storefronts and charming signage. We played with poses leaning against the buildings and sparkly windows, and even got some fun walking shots while laughing and looking around. This was a perfect 75-degree Sunday evening so it was quite busy downtown! Veda received many compliments and also a few comments from people reminiscing about their own senior pictures taken in the same spots. We had to take some breaks and let people walk by, but it was fun and vibrant so it wasn’t an issue at all.
Pro tip for seniors: Outfits that have a little color (pinks, blues, greens) really pop here without clashing with the background. Bonus points for comfy shoes—we do a fair bit of walking!

Second Stop: Parking lot steps!
I always like to capture a good variety of standing, walking, sitting, twirling(!) photos into my client’s final gallery. So, we wandered around the corner and found the cutest set of wooden steps for her to sit on! We were just here for a few minutes, but the sunlight captured her natural beauty perfectly and it was a great addition!

Third stop: Tree-filled alley
Because this photo session took place first week of May, things weren’t quite in full bloom for the summer yet! I scoped around the area before Veda arrived and I found this cute alley near the neighborhoods with a bunch of greenery and I just knew we had to include it in this shoot. Not all locations are picturesque upon looking at them – but Veda was a trooper and trusted that I had a vision! We moved a construction cone (and a couple pieces of trash) out of the way and went on with our magic! For this location, Veda switched into a cute, flirty yellow dress which coordinated perfectly with the green backdrop.

Fourth Stop: The Waterfront Docks
Outfit number three was the showstopper—a long, white, more formal dress. We saved this one for last intentionally as we knew it would be a stunner with the golden hour light and water views. At the docks, the light was absolutely perfect, making the water sparkle in the background. We captured some relaxed, seated poses on the dock, and some standing as well- with gentle lake ripples behind her. These portraits had such a calm, elegant feel to them!
Pro tip for seniors: When planning your flow of outfits, it’s always a good idea to save your favorite outfit for last! It works so beautifully with the dreamy, golden hour sunlight.

Final Stop: The Beach
As the sun dipped lower, we made our way to the beach. The sun here was insanely soft, glowy and beautiful. These were some of our favorite photos from the whole session. Veda was completely comfortable, joyful, and just her natural self here as she walked, twirled, and looked out at the lake. After some beautiful sidewalk shots we ventured down to the water where she kicked off her shoes and dipped her feet into the lake! This was the perfect end to a beautiful evening!

Here are some of my tips for a successful senior pictures experience!
1. Plan Around the Light
Golden hour—about 60–90 minutes before sunset—is ideal. The light is soft, flattering, and brings out the best in both skin tones and scenery. Early morning sessions can also work well if you’re an early riser and want quieter streets.
2. Coordinate Outfits with the Environment
Avoid loud prints that compete with the background. Soft colors like white, pink, blue, light yellow, soft green, or denim always look great here. Regarding changing outfits- you can pop into a restaurant bathroom, the beachside public restroom, or change in your car here!
3. Bring Comfortable Shoes (and a Bag)
We’ll walk quite a bit during the session, so flats or sneakers are your best friend between shots. I always recommend bringing a small tote to carry extra shoes, makeup, water, and accessories.
4. Be Open to the Unexpected
Sometimes the best shots happen in unplanned moments—a breeze that lifts your hair, a random alley(!), light bouncing just right off a window, or a spontaneous laugh. Come with a relaxed mindset and we will have a blast!
Senior year is such a big milestone. It’s more than just cap and gown—it’s the culmination of years of growth, friendships, challenges, and dreams. I believe senior pictures should reflect the full scope of who you are at this moment in time. That’s why I approach each session as a collaboration. I’ll help with outfits, locations, and posing—but I’ll also make space for your ideas, your style, and your personality to shine through. My goal is to create a gallery of images that feel genuine, beautiful, and uniquely you. Veda’s session in Excelsior checked every box: heartfelt, stylish, timeless, and full of joy.
If you’re in the market for some senior pictures, I’d love to connect! I offer a few different session packages—from short and sweet 30-minute shoots to full 90-minute experiences (like Veda’s) with multiple outfits and locations. These spots fill up fast during summer and early fall, so it’s a good idea to reach out a few months in advance to reserve your preferred date.
