Welcoming a new baby is equal parts magical and overwhelming. The days blur together, the newborn stage passes in a heartbeat, and somehow you’re doing the most important thing you’ve ever done while running on very little sleep. That’s exactly why newborn photos matter so much — not just to remember what your baby looked like, but to remember how this time of your life felt. As a mom of 2 girls myself, I know the newborn phase well and I know how you’re feeling in those first few days and weeks. But let me tell you- even those messy early days- getting professional newborn photos taken of my girls is something I never regret!
My goal as a Minneapolis newborn photographer is to create a peaceful experience for you during this chaotic time. With my own daughters, we opted for a studio session for one, and an in-home photo session for our second. Both options are fabulous and have their own benefits. This guide will focus on a studio session and I will walk you through exactly what to expect, how to prepare, and how I’ll take care of every detail so you can simply show up, breathe, and enjoy the experience.

I suggest getting your newborn session on the books 2-3 months before your baby is due. I reserve time on my calendar for a limited number of newborns each month, so it’s best to get it scheduled as soon as you’re ready! You simply book the closest opening to your due date and I will be ready for you when baby arrives!
I prefer to photograph newborns in the studio when they are 7–14 days old. During this window, babies are usually sleepier, squishier, and settle into those soft, peaceful poses parents love. This is also a great time before baby acne might begin, and they’re just so fresh and peaceful.

From the moment you arrive at the studio, the goal is simple: a calm, unrushed, peaceful experience.
I currently do not own my own studio, so I have the opportunity to rent some amazing places, and I choose based on the unique needs of each client! They are all white and full of light. I will have everything ready for you when you arrive – your Client Wardrobe dresses that you pre-selected (optional!), baby blankets, bows, swaddle, sound machine, posing beanbag and beautiful changing basket for added interest and variety in your photos.
Once you arrive, I am happy to hang with baby as you get changed and settled. This is not a fast or stressful session. Newborn photography is baby‑led, which means we move slowly and follow your baby’s cues. There is plenty of time built in for feeding, soothing, diaper changes, and snuggles.
You never need to apologize for your baby being a baby. That’s expected — and welcomed — here.

One of the biggest things parents tell me after their session is how easy and relaxing the experience felt.
You don’t need to know how to pose. You don’t need to worry about your baby crying. You don’t need to have everything perfectly together.
I’ll guide you every step of the way — gently posing you in ways that feel natural and flattering, watching your baby closely for cues, and creating images that feel soft, timeless, and full of connection. My approach is feminine, light‑filled, and emotional without being overly posed or trendy.
Most parents are surprised by how peaceful the session feels. Many tell me it’s the first time they’ve truly slowed down since their baby arrived.

One of the biggest stressors for new moms booking a Minneapolis newborn photography session is deciding what to wear — especially when your body is still healing. That’s why I offer a curated client wardrobe, available at no additional cost.
The wardrobe includes flattering, soft, neutral gowns that photograph beautifully and are designed to feel comfortable and forgiving. These pieces are chosen intentionally to complement my style and keep the focus on you and your baby.
You’re also welcome to bring your own outfit if you prefer, but many moms love being able to arrive, change into something beautiful, and not think twice about it.
For dads and siblings, I recommend simple, neutral clothing — think creams, soft grays, tans, or muted pastels. I’m always happy to help you plan outfits ahead of time so everything feels cohesive without being matchy.

Most sessions last 60-90 minutes, and that time is intentionally unstructured, as baby is boss!
We’ll typically begin with family and parent images while everyone is fresh. I’ll guide you into natural, connected poses that highlight the bond you already feel — nothing stiff or forced.
From there, we’ll move into individual images of your baby. Depending on your baby’s comfort level, this may include wrapped images, unwrapped poses, and close‑up details like tiny fingers, toes, and lashes.
If your baby needs to eat, we pause. If they need extra cuddles, we wait. There is no rush and no pressure.

A little preparation goes a long way in helping your session feel smooth and relaxed.
For Your Baby:
For Parents:
You don’t need to bring outfits for your baby unless there’s something sentimental you’d like included. I provide all wraps, blankets, and textures used during the session.

Parents often come in with the same worries — and I promise, you can let these go:
Your only job is to show up and love your baby.
After your session, I’ll carefully hand‑edit your images in my light, timeless style. You’ll receive an online gallery where you can view your images, download your favorites, and order fine art prints and albums (only if you’d like!) that are absolutely stunning.
These images are designed to live beyond your phone — framed on your walls, held in your hands, and passed down.

The newborn stage is fleeting and tender. It deserves to be remembered in a way that feels beautiful, calm, and true to your family.
An in‑studio newborn session with Angela Watts Photography isn’t just about photos — it’s about creating space for you to slow down, feel taken care of, and walk away with images that remind you just how strong, beautiful, and connected you are in this season.
