One of the biggest decisions when planning senior photos is choosing the right location. The setting you choose helps shape the entire look and feel of your images — whether you want something urban, garden-inspired, or by the water.
As a Minneapolis senior photographer, I spend a lot of time scouting locations around the Twin Cities that offer beautiful light, variety, and timeless backdrops. Minneapolis, Wayzata and the surrounding suburbs offer an incredible range of scenery — from skyline views and historic architecture to lakeside charm and flower-filled gardens.
The best locations also allow us to create a gallery with multiple looks without traveling far, making your session relaxed and fun while still capturing a variety of images.
Although I can’t give away ALL of my favorite locations here (I reserve my whole list for clients!) here are some of my favorite places for Minneapolis senior photos that consistently photograph beautifully.
St. Anthony Main is one of the most iconic spots for Minneapolis senior pictures, and it’s easy to see why.
This historic riverfront area offers a mix of textures and scenery all within walking distance. During a senior session here, we can capture:
The combination of urban architecture and natural river views creates a sophisticated, editorial feel while still keeping the photos relaxed and natural.
This location is perfect for seniors who love a modern city vibe with classic Minneapolis character.

Wayzata is one of the most charming lakeside locations for senior pictures near Minneapolis. Since MANY of my seniors are from Wayzata High School this is one of my favorite and most popular spots for senior pictures!
Located along the shores of Lake Minnetonka, downtown Wayzata has a relaxed, coastal feel that photographs beautifully — especially in the evening light.
Some of my favorite spots for senior photos here include:
The variety within a small walkable area makes it easy to create a gallery that includes lake views, charming downtown scenery, and soft golden light.
If you love a light, summery, lakeside aesthetic, Wayzata is an incredible choice for senior pictures.

Como Park Conservatory is one of the most beautiful garden locations in the Twin Cities.
The conservatory offers elegant architecture and vibrant gardens filled with seasonal flowers, creating a romantic and timeless setting for senior portraits. Nearby areas of Como Park also provide additional backdrops like lakeside paths, fountains, and greenery.
Many seniors choose this location because it offers:
It’s especially perfect for seniors who want their photos to feel soft, elegant, and nature-inspired.

Mill Ruins Park offers one of the most distinctive backdrops for senior photos in Minneapolis and I photograph here a lot!
Located along the Mississippi River near the Stone Arch Bridge, this park features preserved mill structures, stone walls, and historic architecture that give photos incredible texture and depth.
During a session here, we can capture:
This location creates images with a bold and timeless Minneapolis feel, perfect for seniors who want something unique and full of character, and a little bit of edge.

Longfellow Gardens is a beautiful garden tucked within Minnehaha Park and often feels like one of Minneapolis’ hidden gems.
This charming garden space features carefully landscaped flowers, elegant pergola, and lush greenery that create a peaceful setting for senior photos.
What makes Longfellow Gardens so special for senior sessions:
For seniors who love flowers and romantic garden scenery, this location offers a timeless and elegant backdrop.

One of the most common questions seniors ask is: Where should I take my senior photos?
The right location should reflect your personality and the style you want your photos to have. Minneapolis, Wayzata and the surrounding suburbs offer a variety of settings — from urban streets to lakes, gardens, and parks — so there are many ways to create a session that feels uniquely you.
When choosing a location, it helps to think about the overall vibe you want.
If you love city views and architecture
Consider locations like:
These locations provide skyline views, historic textures, and an editorial city feel.
If you love flowers and gardens
You may prefer locations such as:
These spaces create soft, romantic images with lots of color and greenery.
If you love water and sunset views
A lakeside location like Wayzata or Excelsior offers beautiful waterfront scenery and glowing sunset light over Lake Minnetonka.
One of the keys to an amazing senior photo gallery is variety.
Many of my favorite locations — like St. Anthony Main and Wayzata — offer several different backdrops within walking distance. This allows us to move between spots easily and capture a mix of images without needing to drive between locations.
During a senior session we typically incorporate:
My goal is to make your session feel fun, relaxed, and completely natural while creating images that truly reflect who you are during this exciting season of life.
Senior year is such a meaningful milestone, and your photos should feel just as special.
This is just a GLIMPSE of the locations include in my Welcome Guide for booked seniors! When you book your Minneapolis senior pictures with me you’ll receive full access to all the beautiful locations around the Twin Cities that I recommend.
