As a Minnesota family photographer, one of the most common questions I receive is: When should we schedule our family pictures?
The truth is, every season in Minneapolis and the Twin Cities area offers something beautiful. But the right timing depends on the look you love, your family’s personality, and how far in advance you’re able to plan — especially for the most in-demand months.
Here’s how I guide my families through choosing the perfect season for family photos in Minneapolis and the Twin Cities.
Spring feels like a breath of fresh air in Minnesota. I LOVE THIS TIME OF YEAR! Trees are greening, flowers are blooming, and the light if just beautiful.
This is personally my FAVORITE season to photograph families.
As my photography style leans on the feminine side, I’m endlessly inspired by flowers – and love to include them into portraits of all types as much as possible. 🙂 Spring and early summer sessions feel refined and romantic, with a lightness that translates beautifully into timeless artwork for your home.
Spring is ideal if you:

Spring books steadily, though it’s typically more flexible than fall family photos in Minnesota.

Summer in Minnesota is vibrant and relaxed — especially near the water.
Think bare feet in the sand, golden hour at the beach, and evenings along the docks of Lake Minnetonka as the sun sets behind you. Summer family photos feel playful, warm, and full of movement.
As a Minneapolis family photographer, I love summer for families who want their portraits to feel connected and natural. The extended daylight allows for that signature golden glow that simply can’t be replicated indoors. The only downside with summer photos with little kids is the start time is typically close to bed time. The sun sets around 9:00pm, so sessions can go as late as 8 or 8:30. I love it though- Minnesota summers absolutely cannot be beat!
Summer is perfect if your family:
I also offer mini family sessions once per month from June through October, which are a beautiful option for families wanting a shorter, streamlined experience while still updating their portraits.

If you’re hoping for an August session, I recommend reserving your date by spring or early summer — those evenings tend to fill quickly!

Fall in Minneapolis is undeniably beautiful. The parks throughout the Twin Cities transform into layered warmth — rich greens, golden grasses, and vibrant foliage.
It’s a classic look for Minnesota family photography and especially popular for holiday cards and heirloom gifting. Because of that demand, August through October dates book the earliest each year.
If you’re considering fall family photos in Minneapolis:
Fall light is stunning, but the season is short and weather can shift quickly. Planning ahead ensures a seamless experience and the best possible timing.

From November through much of May, Minnesota weather becomes less predictable — which makes this season ideal for studio sessions or warm, cozy in-home family photography.
In-home sessions feel intimate and relaxed. Children are comfortable in their own space, and the images often reflect a slower, more meaningful pace.
If you’d like to see what that experience looks like, you can view an example here:

Studio sessions are also a beautiful winter option for families who love a clean, timeless aesthetic without worrying about the elements. While my heart leans toward spring florals and summer golden light, winter offers its own quiet elegance when approached intentionally. I actually really love in-home family photos especially if your home has a lot of light!

If you want my personal preference — spring and early summer are my favorite seasons. But the best time for family photos in Minneapolis ultimately depends on the feeling you want your portraits to hold inside your home.
