Becoming a parent is magical — and fleeting. In the whirlwind of feedings, sleepless nights, and slow afternoons with your new baby, it’s hard to remember how tiny and delicate they once were. That’s exactly why professional newborn photos matter: they freeze this moment in time in a way that feels calm, timeless, and beautifully you. As a Minneapolis newborn photographer and mom myself, I’ve designed this guide to walk you through every part of the process — from booking and timing to preparation and what your session will feel like — so you can choose what’s right for your family.

One of the first questions most parents ask me is, when do I book newborn photos? I recommend booking 2–3 months before your baby’s due date so you have space on the calendar reserved for your due window. Once your little one arrives, we’ll pin down a specific date that works best for you and your baby.
Most photographers — and myself included — suggest scheduling your session for when your baby is between 7–14 days old. During this time, babies are typically sleepier and easier to settle into gentle, timeless poses, and the soft newborn details you want to remember — tiny fingers, delicate eyelashes, little yawns — are at their most precious.

Many Minneapolis families wonder whether to choose an in-home session or a studio experience. Both options have beautiful benefits, and the right choice depends on your personal vision.
Whether you choose studio or lifestyle, my goal is the same: a relaxed experience where you simply show up and enjoy the moment. Each location has their own unique, special benefits for sure!

Your session isn’t rushed — it’s designed around your baby’s rhythm. Most Minneapolis newborn sessions last approximately 90 minutes, allowing plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and snuggles. You don’t have to worry if your baby fusses, needs to be fed, or wakes up — that’s all part of the experience.
My approach is calm, guided, and intentional. I typically start with some family photos (whether that’s mom, partner, baby or the whole family), then move on to special shots of the baby with each of the parents individually, then of course we move on to the star of the show – the newborn! I like to get some classic, timeless swaddled photos then gently unravel baby to get some details. Whether baby is sleeping or awake – no need to worry – they both turn out beautifully in their own way.

The newborn stage passes in a heartbeat — long before you’re ready — and professional photos give you something timeless to hold onto. These images aren’t just pictures — they’re heirlooms you’ll return to again and again, displayed on walls and passed down for generations.
It’s not about perfection. It’s about feeling what it felt like — the softness, the stillness, the overwhelming love that surrounds you. That’s what I strive to capture in every session. Many parents have endured a long journey to get to the point of newborn photos! I hear this time and again, and I am fully aware that it’s not always easy and you truly need to celebrate this moment in the most beautifully way. You deserve to invest in yourself, Mama!
