Minnetonka Newborn Photography : An Inside Look at Baby Sadie’s First Photos

There is something truly magical about photographing a brand-new baby—the softness, the stillness, the love that fills the room. Yes, the first couple weeks are a complete blur! I remember it like it was yesterday. But it’s still magical and you want it captured! As a Minneapolis newborn photographer, I get to witness these moments often, yet each session feels uniquely special. Even though it was a chilly morning the day after Thanksgiving, Baby Sadie’s session was the perfect blend of peaceful, warm, and beautifully simple, and I’m excited to share a glimpse into her first photos!

This session took place in one of my favorite natural light studios in the Twin Cities area. The space is filled with big windows and wide-open light that just lights up the room no matter the time of day. It’s the kind of light that gives every image that signature bright, soft, timeless look that my clients love.

From the moment Haley and Nick arrived, the session felt calm and unrushed. They settled into the cozy studio atmosphere while I prepared everything for Sadie’s portraits. Haley looked absolutely stunning in a gorgeous floral brown flowy maxi dress from my Client Wardrobe—complimentary to all clients. I love offering wardrobe because it takes the stress out of getting ready and helps moms feel beautiful, especially in those early postpartum weeks. The soft, feminine tones of Haley’s dress paired perfectly with the warm natural light streaming through the windows.

Starting with Mom and Dad

We began the session by the big studio windows, where the morning light was at its most beautiful. I love starting with parent photos because it’s a gentle, natural way to ease everyone into the experience. Haley and Nick were so sweet with each other—quiet smiles, soft cuddles, tender glances at their baby girl. New dads sometimes think they’ll feel awkward, but the moment they hold their baby, everything falls into place.

These early portraits are always some of my favorites because they capture the emotion of becoming a family of three. Nothing forced, nothing posed—just simple, quiet moments full of love.

Peaceful Mom & Baby Connection

Next, we moved to the elegant white studio couch, which is one of my go-to spots for newborn sessions. Its clean, minimalist look keeps all the focus on mom and baby, and the neutral tones create beautifully consistent images.

Haley held Sadie close, laid down on the couch and just closed her eyes to remember this moment and take it all in. These moments of connection—when the world seems to pause and a mother gets to simply take in her baby—are some of the most meaningful images I deliver. Sadie stayed peaceful laying right in front of her mom, sleeping peacefully and clearly loving every cozy moment.

Sadie’s Solo Portraits

Once we finished parent portraits, it was time for Sadie to be the star of the show. Every baby has their own rhythm during a session; some sleep, some stay wide awake, and some switch back and forth. I always reassure parents that anything is normal.

Baby Sadie, however, was perfectly content. She slept almost the entire time—though I always remind parents that sleepy babies are never expected. Wrapped in soft, neutral swaddles, she looked like the sweetest little bundle, and we captured beautiful close-ups of her profile, her cheeks, her tiny nose, and her delicate fingers curled into the coziest poses.

After swaddled photos, I gently unwrapped her to show off more of her newborn features—her tiny hands, and the adorable way she stretches her arms and legs. These unwrapped photos are often some of my favorites because they feel so real and authentic to those early days. Sadie gave us a few stretches, a few peaceful smiles, and then drifted right back into sleep. It seriously couldn’t have been sweeter!
