After a long (looooonnng) Minnesota winter, spring arrives quietly — and then all at once.
The trees begin to bloom in the most beautiful shades of pink and white. Purple lilacs start filling the air with the sweetest scent. Fresh green leaves return, flowering gardens come alive, and suddenly the entire landscape feels soft, romantic, and full of color again.
It’s one of the shortest seasons we get here, but without question, one of the most beautiful (in my opinion!).
And for family photos? It creates pure magic.
As a Minneapolis family photographer, this is what I live for! This recent spring session with the sweetest family of three reminded me exactly why I love this season so much. Their little one had just turned one year old 2 months ago — full of curiosity about the blooming trees, huge smiles (especially when he went on his dad’s shoulders for the first time!!), and that joyful toddler energy that makes sessions feel so alive. Between the blooming trees, soft evening light, and all the cuddly in-between moments, their gallery felt timeless from the very beginning.
These are the kinds of images families hold onto forever.

One of the reasons spring family photos are so loved in Minneapolis is because the scenery changes dramatically for a very short window of time.
For a few weeks each year, the Twin Cities become filled with flowering trees, pastel blooms, soft greenery, and dreamy evening light. Parks, gardens, and hidden nature spots suddenly feel romantic and vibrant again after months of winter. It’s different from summer because there are no actual flowers blooming yet – it’s just the trees and shrubs which makes for an even more dramatic backrop.

One of my favorite things about spring family photography in Minneapolis is the color palette nature gives us naturally.
Soft pink flowering trees. Purple lilacs. Fresh green grass. White blossoms from the MN crabapple trees. Everything feels airy, feminine, romantic, and light, which aligns beautifully with the style I love.
Spring blooms are incredibly flattering for wardrobe choices. Neutrals, soft pastels, creams, muted florals, linen textures, and lighter fabrics all photograph beautifully against the flowering trees.
The entire season feels elegant without trying too hard.

The hardest part about spring in Minnesota is how quickly it changes.
A flowering tree that looks breathtaking one week may be completely green the next. Apple blossoms come and go. White first, then pink. Lilacs bloom and fade quickly. Some of the most beautiful flowering locations only peak for a matter of days.
That’s why spring sessions require flexibility, planning, and location scouting — and honestly, that’s one of my favorite parts of what I do.
I spend a huge amount of time every season driving around Minneapolis and the surrounding areas scouting blooming trees, flowering gardens, hidden parks, open fields, and soft natural landscapes. I’m constantly watching bloom timing and seasonal changes so I can guide families toward locations that are at their absolute best during their session date.
You do not need to know where to go or what’s blooming. That’s my job.
Whether your vision is:
…I’ll help choose the perfect location for your family.

One of the biggest questions Minneapolis families ask is what to wear — especially during spring when weather and colors can change quickly.
The good news is that spring naturally works beautifully with soft, elevated styling.
I always recommend:
I typically advise families to avoid overly bright colors, neon tones, harsh patterns, or heavy logos so the focus stays on connection and emotion rather than distractions.
And you do not have to figure this out alone.
Every family I work with receives wardrobe guidance for the entire family so everything photographs cohesively together. I help coordinate tones, textures, movement, and overall styling so your gallery feels polished and timeless.
I also offer a client closet for babies and toddlers with carefully selected pieces that photograph beautifully and take some of the stress out of planning.

If you’ve been considering family photos, spring truly is one of the most beautiful times to do it — especially if you love soft color, dreamy blooms, and romantic natural scenery. If you’re looking for a Minneapolis family photographer, I’d love to create something beautiful for you.
And if spring timing doesn’t work for your family, I would still love to help you create something beautiful in another season.
From location scouting to wardrobe guidance to helping little ones feel comfortable during sessions, my goal is always to create an experience that feels effortless, relaxed, and meaningful from beginning to end.
Because your family deserves more than stiff poses and rushed images.
You deserve photographs that feel like you.
