Congratulations, Mama! This is SUCH an exciting time for you. As a mom of 2 girls, I remember bursting with excitement at the anticipation of their arrival. I had all the books, belonged to all of the online baby sites, I knew exactly what size my little fruit was at all times! All the things. 🙂 Although exciting, this time comes with a lot of questions! One important question being, “When should I book my baby’s newborn photos??” As a Minneapolis newborn photographer, I’m here to help you out.
Most expecting parents across Minneapolis and the Twin Cities ask the same question: when is the right time to book newborn photos? The simple answer: earlier than you think. Because newborn photographers take a limited number of sessions each month (including me!), the best time to reserve your session is BEFORE your baby arrives.

I recommend booking your newborn session at least two months before your due date! Yep! This ensures availability and allows for a calm, thoughtful planning process.
Families in Minneapolis, Edina, Wayzata, and surrounding Twin Cities suburbs often reach out during their second trimester, which is an ideal time to secure a session.

Instead of choosing a fixed date, your session is reserved around your due date. You will book the Monday closest to your due date to get it reserved on the calendar – then when your baby arrives your photo session date will be set!
Once your baby arrives, we finalize the session date together. This flexible approach allows your newborn photos to feel natural and stress-free, no matter when your baby arrives.

I typically photograph newborns when they are 10–14 days old. During this time, babies are often sleepier and more easily settled into gentle, comfortable poses.
However, beautiful newborn images can be created at many stages. Whether your baby is a few days old or a few weeks old, the most important thing is capturing this fleeting season in a meaningful way.

Experienced newborn photographers plan for flexibility!
If your baby arrives early, we adjust your session sooner. If your baby arrives later than expected, we simply shift the session window. This ensures families feel supported rather than rushed. You should not need to stress or worry about this- once you book your due date, you’re locked in and your photographer should take care of the rest!

The early weeks of parenthood are overwhelming. Booking early removes pressure and ensures you don’t miss the ideal timing.
A well-planned newborn photography experience accounts for real-life birth timelines, not just calendar slots.
Newborn photography requires specialized training and patience. Working with a professional newborn photographer ensures a safe, calm environment. Make sure the photographer allows plenty of time for your session – this will ensure you don’t feel rushed or stressed.
Also, look into elevated add-ons like, Do they offer a client wardrobe? Do they help you prepare for the session, or is it just a photoshoot? You want it to feel like a beautiful, peaceful experience – not just a few snapshots. Lastly – do you want prints? Or just digitals? This is another thing to keep in mind when looking for a photographer. If you want beautiful printed products like albums and wall art to remember this special time make sure you choose a photographer who offers this as an option!
Whether you prefer a studio newborn session or lifestyle images at home, knowing your style helps you book with confidence. Check out some of my latest newborn blog posts to learn a little about the pros and cons to each, and help you think about what might be best for you!
If you’re expecting a baby in Minneapolis, Edina, Wayzata, or nearby Twin Cities communities, the best time to reach out is before your due date.
Booking early allows you to relax and enjoy those first days with your baby, knowing your newborn photos are already thoughtfully planned.
