How to Choose the Perfect Senior Photos Location (and Why It Matters)

So you’re taking your senior photos — cue the excitement!!! It’s seriously a BLAST! This is your year, your moment, and your time to show off exactly who you are.

But before we start posing, twirling, laughing, or strutting through a downtown street, there’s one big decision to make: Where should I take my Minneapolis senior photos??

The good news? You don’t have to figure it out alone — I help every step of the way.
But here’s what you need to know as you start dreaming about your session.

Your Location Tells Your Story

Think of the location as the vibe of your whole session.

When you think about your own senior pictures, what pictures is in your mind?

• Soft, dreamy field with sun setting behind you?
• Lakeside golden hour with pink and yellow skies?
• Urban city vibes with the sun glowing against the buildings?
• Something totally YOU and not like everyone else’s pics?

The setting WE choose:

• Sets the tone
• Highlights your style
• Shows your personality
• Helps your photos feel effortlessly you

Choosing the right place turns your photos into something personal — not just “smile-at-the-camera” portraits. I stress – this is not a decision you make on your own. We will work together to choose a location that matches your vision and vibe!

Start With Who YOU Are

You deserve senior photos that feel like YOU — not someone else’s Instagram aesthetic. You have been scrolling Instagram or Pinterest for “senior pictures locations in Minneapolis” and yes that’s a great place to start! I would totally do the same. It’s a great spot to get ideas and get started but the important thing is to make it totally YOU!

Ask yourself:

• Where do you feel most confident?
• Which outfits do you love the most?
• Are you loud and adventurous or soft and low-key?
• Do you want color and movement or clean, modern lines?

Here are a few vibes that might spark an idea:
City energy — murals, bridges, skyline, brick textures
Garden or flower-filled — pretty, feminine, romantic
Field + sunset — natural, warm, glowy
Lakefront — breezy, calm, classic Minnesota
Meaningful places — your school field, your neighborhood, your fave hangout

There is no “right” choice — only the one that matches your personality.

Lighting = Magic

You don’t need to know when the light is best — that’s my job. I plan all of my senior photos sessions to end at golden hour. Depending on which package you choose, we will begin 1.5 to 2 hours before sunset to maximize the light and time it perfectly for the golden sunlight.

I plan the timing and guide you so you’re always in the most flattering, natural light — no harsh shadows, no squinting, no guessing.

Pick Somewhere Meaningful (If You Want To!)

Your photos don’t have to happen somewhere trendy or famous.

Meaningful + personal can be even better:

• A lake that you frequented growing up (I hear this a TON about Lake Minnetonka and Lake Harriet!)
• Storefronts and restaurants that you visited with your family (Again, DT Wayzata)
• Parks that you visited with your family as a child (Richardson Nature Center, Lebannon Hills!)

Adding something personal creates photos you’ll still love in 10, 20, 30 years — because they show more than what you look like. They show your life right now.
